You may have noticed that over the last few years, diet culture has seized on gut health as being the new thing we should all be worried about. Probiotics seem to be everywhere, instagram influencers are hawking supposed food sensitivity tests, and restrictive diets are the blanket recommendation for any kind of gastric distress.
That’s why I’m so glad Beth Rosen agreed to come on the podcast to set the record straight on having a healthy gut. Beth is a non-diet dietitian and digestive disorders expert who is frustrated by all the misinformation out there about treating gut issues.
We talked about what it means to have a healthy gut, what fads should be ignored, the low-FODMAP diet, and how to be an intuitive eater when you have gastric issues. If you’re struggling to understand your gut, this episode should help.
We discussed:
- How Beth became a dietitian who specializes in gut health and intuitive eating (and how one of her big catalysts for change happened over an apple!).
- How intuitive eating helped Beth return to eating ice cream after a long period of time restricting it.
- What the gut is, and what gut health entails.
- How the “gut-brain connection” works.
- Why not everyone should be supplementing with probiotics.
- What prebiotics are and how they benefit us.
- Gut health fad diets like low-carb and gluten-free diets.
- The inaccuracy of many popular food sensitivity tests that are on the market today.
- The Low-FODMAP diet for people with digestive issues.
- Why it’s important to work with an expert when trying the Low-FODMAP diet, especially because it’s not right for everyone.
- How in some cases there are effective non-dietary interventions for treating gut health issues, especially for people with eating disorders.
- The way intuitive eating works when you are dealing with gastric distress.
- How to not feel deprived even when you do have to cut something out of your diet in order to feel your best.
- How Beth defines health and wellness for herself at this moment in her life.
